The College of Geography and Resources Sciences was founded in April 1985, and was established as the College of Resources and Environment in March 2001. It was renamed the College of Geography and Resources Sciences in January 2006. At present, it has four undergraduate majors: geography, physical geography and resource environment, human geography and urban-rural planning, and geographic information science. Geographic science majors are selected as national characteristic specialty construction sites, and the College has the right to grant master's degree in geography. Among them, human geography is a provincial key subject, while postgraduates are enrolled in curriculum and teaching (geography) specialty and high school geography education master. The Southwest Land Resources Assessment and Monitoring Laboratory is a key laboratory jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Education. The College is the main member of the MBA Education Center of Sichuan Normal University (Land Resources and Real Estate Direction).

Among the faculty members, there are one recipient of the special allowance from the State Council, one leader in academic technology in Sichuan Province, one candidate in reserving for the leader in academic technology in Sichuan Province, and one candidate in the provincial training program for outstanding young subject leaders. In recent years, the faculty has undertaken more than 200 scientific research projects such as 863 Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Land and Resources Department of the Ministry of Land and Resources, Provincial Department of Education, Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and published 7 academic monographs and nearly 200 academic papers. Scientific research achievements have won 8 awards at or above the provincial level. At the same time, in recent years, the Faculty of the College has hosted 14 projects on the quality of personnel training and teaching reform of Sichuan Higher Education Reform Project. The teaching achievements have won 10 awards for teaching achievements at or above the provincial level. There are 2 key courses at the provincial level (Urban Land Economic Evaluation, Ecology) and 4 top-quality courses at the provincial level.（ "Phytogeography", "China Economic Geography", "Urban Land Management" and "Comprehensive Physical Geography". Editor-in-chief publishes 7 textbooks. 

The College has six research centers and institutes: the Institute of Urban Land Economic Evaluation of Sichuan Normal University, the Institute of Urban and Rural Planning and Landscape Design of Sichuan Normal University, the Institute of Real Estate and Regional Development of Sichuan Normal University, the Applied Research Center of Remote Sensing and GIS of Sichuan Normal University, the Resource Ecology Research Center of Sichuan Normal University, and the Institute of Population of Sichuan Normal University.

The College laboratory is a central laboratory at the university level. It consists of more than 20 basic or applied laboratories, such as soil, map, survey, climate, geology, remote sensing, geographic information system, urban and rural planning, environmental analysis and monitoring. It has a geographic laboratory building of 5000 square meters and more than 10 million yuan of advanced instruments and equipment, including plasma mass spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrometer, and gas and liquid chromatography. The reference room of the College has more than 8000 books, more than 100 kinds of newspapers and periodicals. The reading room covers an area of 210 square meters and has been digitized in an all-round way.

The College has dozens of practice bases, including field practice bases for geographic science majors (such as Dujiangyan-Qingchengshan, Emeishan-Leshan, Panzhihua-Xichang, Sichuan Grassland Research Institute, Shihai National Geological Park, Xingwen County, Sichuan, etc.); and teaching practice bases for geographic science majors (such as Chengdu No.7 Middle School, No.4 Middle School, Yandao Street Middle School, etc.). Practice bases of resource, environment and urban and rural planning management specialty (such as Chengdu Jiabao Management Consultant Co., Ltd., Chengdu Planning and Design Institute, etc.); Practice bases of Geographic Information System specialty (such as Research Institute of Remote Sensing Application of Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Chengdu Planning and Design Research Digital Production Co., Ltd.).

With the goal of "creating brand and running characteristic", the College embodies the train of thought of attaching importance to characteristics, practice and innovation. With the support of the Party and League organizations, it strives to cultivate students' correct world outlook, outlook on life and values. It also implements the team model of students' quality training under the guidance of tutors and holds the annual “Green Future” on students' professional competitions and exhibitions. The Party Committee and Party branch of the College were successively appraised as advanced grass-roots Party organizations and excellent Party branches for earthquake relief. The College League Committee and Student Union were repeatedly appraised as the Advanced League Committee and Student Union of the College, and Class 5 of Grade 2004 of the College's Geographic Science Specialty was appraised as the national excellent class collective. Practice team has been appraised as Chengdu Excellent Social Practice Unit for many times. The students declare various projects of scientific research and innovation to rank in the forefront of the university. The College Student Choir won the first prize in the “12﹒9 “ Movement Chorus Competition. The College attaches great importance to the employment of graduates, and has been awarded many times by the university.
